Pinnacle Peak Area
Pinnacle Peak is both a landform and a coveted Scottsdale, Arizona residential area. Pinnacle Peak, the landform, rises out of the Sonoran desert floor to an elevation of 3,170 feet. Pinnacle Peak was formed one million years ago as the result of tectonic plate movement and is composed of granite, feldspar, mica and quartz.

Pinnacle Peak / Troon Area is home to a variety of Sonoran plants and animals. Mountain lions, gray fox, desert tortoises, Gila monsters, coyotes, chuckwallas and western diamondback rattlesnakes are among the Sonoran animals that still inhabit the area. These critters share the Pinnacle Peak / Troon Area area with saguaro, cholla, ocotillo, palo verde trees, ironwood trees, bursage, and other species of Sonoran flora.
The Pinnacle Peak area has been home to the prehistoric Hohokam people, nomadic Apache, ranchers, and homesteaders during the 1930s, including K. T. Palmer, who would co-found Carefree, AZ during the 1950s. There was a stagecoach stop at Reata Pass and the world’s largest western steakhouse, Pinnacle Peak Patio, was established in 1957. But for most people living in Arizona during the 50s and 60s, Pinnacle Peak remained a remote, unspoiled area.
The General Store, at the corners of Pinnacle Peak Road and Pima Road, was the initial anchor for this community.
As the 60s gave way to the 70s and then the 80s, houses began to replace vacant ranch land. Pinnacle Peak Country Club opened in 1976, followed by Desert Highlands in 1983, and Troon Golf and Country Club in 1986. Troon North, which has two 18 hole public/for-profit course, was opened for play in 1990 with The Monument and then the Pinnacle course in 1995 .
In 2003, Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale became home to the 150 acre City of Scottsdale Pinnacle Peak Park. Much of Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale has been developed, providing a home for many new Arizonans.
The Friends of Pinnacle Peak Park was founded to ensure that the Park's character, landscape and ambiance are preserved for its future users. Since opening in April 2002, close to one million visitors have enjoyed the beautiful trail that Pinnacle Peak Park offers.
The beauty of the Sonoran Desert , perhaps unsurpassed compared to any other desert in the world, is captured so exquisitely at the Park, but like all desert areas, it is very fragile. "The Friends of Pinnacle Peak Park work cooperatively with the City of Scottsdale to support, preserve and enhance the unique character of Pinnacle Peak Park."
Matt Lucky has donated his time as a volunteer at the park and help start the Friends of Pinnacle Peak Park Newsletter. Matt Lucky is a board member and the editor for the newsletter.
